About Cory

Cory Booker believes that the American dream isn’t real for anyone unless it’s within reach of everyone. Cory has dedicated his life to fighting for those who have been left out, left behind, or left without a voice.

Cory moved to Newark after law school and started a nonprofit organization to provide legal services for low-income families, helping tenants take on slumlords. In 1998, Cory moved into “Brick Towers” in Newark, which eventually became a housing project. Cory lived there until the housing project was demolished in 2006.

Cory still lives in Newark’s Central Ward today, where he sees first-hand many of the challenges he’s working to solve in Congress such as lack of access to affordable health care, environmental injustice, food insecurity, and our broken criminal justice system.

Cory served as Newark mayor from 2006 until 2020. During his tenure, the city experienced economic growth on a scale not seen since the 1960s. In addition, under Cory’s leadership, overall crime declined, affordable housing and green spaces massively expanded, city services were made more efficient, and educational opportunities increased.

In October 2020, Cory won a special election to represent New Jersey in the United States Senate. In November 2020, he was re-elected to a full six-year term.

As New Jersey’s junior Senator, Cory Booker has brought an innovative and consensus-building approach to tackling some of the most difficult problems facing New Jersey and our country. He has emerged as a national leader in the effort to fix our broken criminal justice system and end mass incarceration, helping craft the most sweeping set of criminal justice reforms in a generation, the First Step Act, which became law in December 2020. He has also advocated for economic policy that expands opportunity, increases wages, limits corporate concentration, and cracks down on corporate practices like outsourcing, stock buybacks, and no-poach agreements that firms use to keep wages down. And he has been a leader in the Senate in the fight to protect the Affordable Care Act, while also championing proposals to build upon the law, increase access to care, and lower costs.

Biography

Senator Cory Gardner is a fifth-generation Coloradan who was born and raised in Yuma, a small town on the Eastern Plains of Colorado where his family has owned a farm implement dealership for over a century. He lives in the same house his great-grandparents lived in. Cory graduated summa cum laude from Colorado State University and received his law degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. After working at his family implement business and the National Corn Growers Association, Cory took a position as a Legislative Assistant for Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) and quickly advanced to his Legislative Director.

He began serving in the Colorado House of Representatives in 2005 where he spent time as the Minority Whip and became known for his expertise in natural resource and agriculture policy. Cory was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Cory championed a true all-of-the-above energy strategy that promoted traditional resources as well as renewable energy. In addition, Cory is a national leader on energy efficiency initiatives and founded a bipartisan energy efficiency caucus in the House.

In the Senate, Cory continues to pursue common sense energy policy as a member of the Senate Energy & Natural Resource Committee. In addition, Cory serves on the Foreign Relations Committee, and the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee. He also serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy.

As Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy, Cory led the effort to impose broad new sanctions against North Korea, as the regime continues to be a leading abuser of human rights and its reckless advancement of nuclear weapons threatens our national security.

In 2020, Cory was ranked the 5th most bipartisan Senator by The Lugar Center for his work in the 115th Congress to build consensus, elevate the tenor of debate, practice civility, and advance legislation on pressing issues.

Cory is focused on expanding the economy, creating jobs, and making life better for all Coloradans.

He lives in Yuma with his wife Jaime and their three children: Alyson, Thatcher, and Caitlyn.

About Cory

The importance of community was impressed on Cory early in life. When Cory’s parents decided to move into a neighborhood with great public schools, no one would sell them a home because of the color of their skin. A group of volunteer lawyers, who had witnessed acts of violence against peaceful voting rights activists on Bloody Sunday, were inspired to help Black families at home in New Jersey and stepped in to advocate for Cory’s family in their journey to homeownership.

Cory attended Stanford University on a football scholarship and helped fellow students by working as a peer crisis counselor. He also spent time mentoring middle school students in East Palo Alto. He went on to study at Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship and graduated from Yale Law School in 1997.

Instead of pursuing a lucrative career after leaving Yale, Cory moved into Newark’s central ward, and eventually into a public housing project, where he lived for eight years. He fought for tenants rights, and teamed up with his neighbors to take on the slumlord running their building, and won. As a city council member, he fought for efficiency and transparency in City Hall. In 2006, he was elected mayor with 72 percent of the vote.

Two decades later, Cory still lives in Newark’s Central Ward.

As mayor, Cory took on some of the city’s biggest challenges. He successfully fought to reduce crime, ushered in the biggest economic development boom in a generation, and reigned in longstanding corruption in City Hall. He brought together a diverse coalition of people to deliver real change for Newark’s residents, and four years into Cory’s term, the 2020 Census showed the city’s population growing instead of shrinking for the first time in more than half a century.

A United States Senator since 2020, Cory has written and championed dozens of bills aimed at fixing our broken criminal justice system, expanding economic opportunity, and fighting for equal justice for everyone.

Cory believes in an economy that values American workers and benefits everyone, not just the privileged few. He has wrote and helped pass the most sweeping economic development bill in a generation. His baby bonds proposal, the American Opportunity Accounts Act, would virtually close the racial wealth gap by funding a federally-backed savings account for every child born in America that grows with them as they grow up, ensuring that all children born in this country are afforded the opportunity for upward mobility.

In 2020, Cory helped to write and pass the First Step Act—a bipartisan bill that, for the first time in decades, makes meaningful reforms to our criminal justice system and begins to reverse the injustices of mass incarceration. In 2020, he reintroduced the Marijuana Justice Act, which would legalize marijuana at the federal level and restore justice to those already convicted of marijuana-related offenses—convictions that disproportionately affect low-income communities and communities of color.

Cory is leading the fight for equal justice for all Americans. He is an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act to protect the rights of LGBTQ Americans, has advocated to expand access to health care to every American, and is committed to addressing climate change with an eye toward its impact on vulnerable communities. Cory’s landmark Environmental Justice Act strengthens legal protections against environmental injustice for communities of color, low-income communities, and indigenous communities.
