Trading Websites Every Day Trader Should Know

Great Resources and Day Trading Tools

Looking for day trading resources to help you out with your day trading? These trading websites deliver some great tools for analyzing trades, finding trades and tracking your trades.

TradingView Provides Quick Research is a site providing real-time prices on stocks, electronically traded funds (ETF), and foreign exchange (forex) pairs. It also provides delayed data on futures markets (most futures trade via contract for difference (CFD), and CFD data is real-time). If you are new to trading and want to practice watching the market in real-time, this site allows you to do so.

If you’re an experienced trader, it’s a quick and easy site to pull up to do some research, as it works well while on the road or if not near your normal trading terminal. TradingView also works well as a “backup” data feed, in case you lose quotes or get disconnected from your trading terminal or broker.

The charts themselves are of high quality, providing all of the popular indicators, comparison tools and chart types traders use (such as candlesticks and Heiken Ashi).

Other features include a stock screener, watch lists, paper trading (to test your strategies or learn) and alerts. A community chat portal also exists for discussing your trading ideas with other traders on TradingView.

StockCharts is Useful for Analysis offers a ton of free resources, and you’ll likely find yourself spending a fair bit of time on the site as you explore the high-quality trading articles as well.

The Sector Summary shows which sectors are hot over various time frames. Many day traders like to focus on buying strong stocks in strong sectors in a bull market (rising prices), and short selling weak stocks in weak sectors in a bear market (falling prices). This tool can help you easily find such stocks. Click on the sectors, and then the sub-sectors within to get a list of stocks ranked by performance.

The StockCharts SCTR Report lists large-capitalization stocks from strongest to weakest, so you have a quick list of stocks moving well to the upside or downside at either end of the list.

The DecisionPoint Market Analysis Gallery (DP Chart Gallery) breaks down how the stock market is performing by using various daily charts and technical indicators on different time frames. It’s a quick way to learn about analyzing price actions or grab a snapshot of the market direction and potential turning points.

Normal price charts can be changed to “seasonality charts,” which show how a particular asset performs during different seasons.

Finviz Provides Trading Research

The homepage of offers a host of stocks which are potential day trading candidates. Quickly view the day’s top gainers and losers, see which stocks are breaking out and look at the day’s most volatile stocks.

Use the other pages to dig up more data on stocks, forex pairs or futures. The News page provides timely reports and analysis from major news vendors. The Screener tab allows you to find stocks that match your criteria for trading. The Map option shows how stocks are performing during the trading day.

Price data is delayed on the free version of the site, which is still useful for research, but as a day trader, you may want more timely information, especially if using the home page for trade ideas. Finviz Elite is the site’s premium subscription tool, which offers real-time quotes, pre-market data, alerts and more.

StockTwits, a Social Media Platform for Traders

If you’re an active trader and want a constant stream of stocks (or other assets) that are moving well or breaking out, then this social media platform is one of the best free resources out there.

Search for day traders on StockTwits, and follow them if they provide timely information on stocks (or other assets) that are moving well for day trading purposes. Utilize your own strategy for trading the assets mentioned. StockTwits is just an idea generator not a trade signal service, or at least it isn’t recommended for that.

StockTwits can be distracting, so while day trading keeps the focus on market research related to your specific trade parameters and market.

Trading Simulators

For traders starting out, a trading simulator is the best free resource available. While a simulator won’t replicate the emotional ups and downs of making and losing real money, it will let you know if your trading methods are sound or not. Simulations allow you to test your knowledge, strategies, and abilities without risk.

There are many trading simulators available. It might be a good idea to use one offered by a broker you would consider using in real trades. This allows you to become familiar with the broker, their fees, and their platform while developing your trading skills.

Some Final Words on Free Trading Websites

Whether for research or generating trade ideas, these free trading websites offer tools to help in your day trading endeavors. These are resources to help you trade in a more informed manner because ultimately, the more information you have the better you will trade.

The Best Technical Analysis Trading Software

There are those who say a day trader is only as good as his charting software. While that’s debatable, it’s certainly true that a key part of a trader’s job — like a radiologist’s — involves interpreting data on a screen; in fact, day trading as we know it today wouldn’t exist without market software and electronic trading platforms.

A lot of software applications are available from brokerage firms and independent vendors claiming varied functions to assist traders. Most brokerages offer trading software, armed with a variety of trade, research, stock screening, and analysis functions, to individual clients when they open a brokerage account. In fact, the bundled software applications – which also boast bells-and-whistles like in-built technical indicators, fundamental analysis numbers, integrated applications for trade automation, news, and alert features – often act as part of the firm’s sales pitch in getting you to sign up.

Much of the software is complimentary; some of it may cost extra, as part of a premium package; a lot of it, invariably, claims that it contains “the best stock charts” or “the best free trading platform.” Fact: There is no single best stock chart or best stock screener software. There are too many markets, trading strategies, and personal preferences for that. But we can examine some of the most widely-used trading software out there and compare their features. Whether their utility justifies their price points is your call.

One of the most popular stock trading software applications, MetaStock offers more than 300 technical indicators, built-in drawing tools like Fibonacci retracement to complement technical indicators, integrated news, fundamental data with screening and filtering criteria, and global markets coverage across multiple assets: equities, derivatives, forex, futures, and commodities. Both its MetaStock Daily Charts Subscription and its MetaStock Real Time packages (especially geared for day traders) include its highly praised stock charts software.

Worden TC2000

If you are interested exclusively in U.S and Canadian stocks and funds, then TC2000 offers a good solution. Features include stock charts, watch lists, alerts, instant messaging, news, scanning, and sorting.TC2000 offers fundamental data coverage, more than 70 technical indicators with 10 drawing tools, and an easy-to-use trading interface, as well as a backtesting function on historical data. It does not, however, offer automated trading tools, and asset classes are limited to stocks, funds, and ETFs.

Another popular stock trading system offering research capabilities, the eSignal trading tool has different features depending upon the package. It has global coverage across multiple asset classes, including stocks, funds, bonds, derivatives, and forex. eSignal scores high on trade management interface with news and fundamental figures coverage, and its stock charts software allows for a lot of customization. Available technical indicators appear to be limited in number and come with backtesting and alert features.

An integrated trading and charting software system, providing an end-to-end solution from order entry to execution with customized development options and third-party library integration compatible for more than 1000 apps and add-on products, NinjaTrader is one of the commonly used research and trading platforms. It’s especially geared to futures and forex traders. Apart from the usual technical indicators (100+), fundamentals, charting, and research tools, it also offers a useful trade simulator, enabling risk-free trade learning for budding traders. NinjaTrader is free to use for advanced charting, backtesting, and trade simulation. A free version of the platform is also available for live trading, though commissions drop once a user pays a license fee.

Wave59 PRO2

Offering advanced level products for experienced traders, Wave59 PRO2 offers high-end functionality, including “hive technology artificial intelligence module, market astrophysics, system testing, integrated order execution, pattern building and matching, the Fibonacci vortex, a full suite of Gann-based tools, training mode, and neural networks,” to quote the website.

EquityFeed Workstation

One prominently highlighted feature of the EquityFeed Workstation is a stock hunting tool called “FilterBuilder”— built upon a huge number of filtering criteria that enable traders to scan and select stocks per their desired parameter; advocates claim it’s some of the best stock screening software around. Level 2 market data is also available, and coverage includes OTC and PinkSheet markets. However, it offers limited technical indicators and no backtesting or automated trading. Its product-specific search tools like ETFView, SectorView, etc. rank among the best stock screening software. And it even offers free trading platforms – during the two-week trial period, that is.

Targeted at active, short-term traders with precise entry and exit strategies, ProfitSource claims to have an edge with complex technical indicators, especially Elliot Wave analysis and backtesting functionality with more than 40+ automated technical indicators built-in. Its asset class coverage spans across equities, forex, options, futures, and funds at the global level.

With trading platforms and analytics software that cover different geographic regions (for the U.S., UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Europe, Hong Kong, India, and South Africa), VectorVest is the one for the intercontinental crowd. Its program offers comprehensive coverage for common technical indicators across major stocks and funds all around the world. VectorVest also offers strong backtesting capabilities, customization, real-time filtering, watch lists, and charting tools.

INO MarketClub

For users specifically looking for charting software, INO’s MarketClub offers technical indicators, trend lines, quantitative analysis tools, and filtering functionality integrated with a charting and trading system — not just stocks, but futures, forex, ETFs and precious metals.

The Bottom Line

The decision to go beyond free trading platforms and pay extra for software should be based on the product functionality best fitting your trading needs. You can often test-drive for nothing: Many market software companies offer no-cost trial periods, sometimes for as long as five weeks. Novice traders who are entering the trading world can select software applications that have a good reputation with required basic functionality at a nominal cost — perhaps a monthly subscription instead of outright purchase — while experienced traders can explore individual products selectively to meet their more specific criteria.

2. Stock Rover – Best Free Stock Screener & Good Charts + Broker Integration

From my perspective, Stock Rover is simply the single best stock screener on the market today, in fact it won our Top 10 Best Stock Screeners Review & Test.

Stock Rover — Winner Best Stock Screener

10 years of historical financial and performance data combined with a truly huge collection of fundamental performance metrics, allows you to truly implement successful dividend and value investing strategies.

It also has stock charting capabilities that complement the scanning functionality focusing on financial metrics charting, but also including technical indicators like volume, moving averaging and relative strength.

You can have Stock Rover for free, however, the real power of Stock Rover is unleashed with the Premium Plus service. Moreover, their top tier of service is not even expensive when compared to the competition.

How Much Does Stock Rover Cost?

  • Free $0 — Scanning for 10,000 stocks, 43,000 mutual funds & ETF’s, broker integration, portfolio analysis & market news
  • Essentials $7.99 US /mo — 5 years of historical data, 10 fair value and margin of safety ratings per month + earnings calendar
  • Premium $17.99 US /mo — 350 fundamental metrics, 10 years of historical data, stock & ETF ranked screening. 10 stock ratings per month, 20 fair value & margin of safety ratings per month.
  • Premium Plus(Recommended) — $27.99 US / mo — 10 years of historical screening, unlimited margin of safety and fair value scoring, unlimited stock warnings and stock ratings + analyst ratings scoring.

I strongly recommend going for the Stock Rover Premium Plus at $27.99 per month. Why? Because having used the service extensively, I cannot live without the unlimited stock ratings, analyst ratings scoring and the unlimited fair value and margin of safety scoring.

Stock Rover Dashboard — Screenshot

Stock Charting & Technical Analysis

Looking at stock charts with Stock Rover is different from all the other software vendors on the market. Whereas MetaStock & TradingView focus on hundreds of technical analysis (price/volume) indicators, Stock Rover focuses on charting the fundamental financial strength indicators.

With over 154 different financial indicators, and only 9 technical analysis indicators, Stock Rover is not the best service for technical analysis or frequent trading, but it is by far the most complete package for fundamental income and value investors. So, although this section is for technical analysis, they are so good with charting fundamentals I have rated them a score of 70%.

Caveat — there are no possibilities to draw trend-lines or annotate charts in Stock Rover.

Stock Rover Screeners — Buffett’s Holy Grail

Here is another screener that I really like. If you select any screener, in this case, I selected the “Strong Buys Screener” the Fair Value Screener and simply select the “Fair Value” tab, you are rewarded with arguably the killer features of Stock Rover. The Fair Value and Margin of Safety analysis and rankings.

These analysis factors are a nightmare to manually calculate yourself and it could be said, warrant the investment in Stock Rover all by themselves.

Fair Value and Margin of Safety Rankings

Stock Rover Usability

Within 15 minutes I was using Stock Rover no installation required and no configuring data feeds, it was literally just there.

Stock Rover is up and running with a single click of the login button.

Even better is the fact it there are so many curated screeners and portfolios to import and use you are instantly being productive. It is quite a feat that it is so easy to use considering Stock Rover has so many powerful scoring and analysis systems.

3. TC2000 — Best Free Charts for Detailed Technical Analysis & Scanning is merged with TC2000, who are actually a review winner for our Premium Stock Market Software Review, so they have an excellent track record in delivering quality services.

Still completely free and no credit card required. You get stunning charts, all US stocks & options, dozens of indicators, streaming data, option chains, even free practice trading.

Worden Brothers have decided to move the chartings software directly into the TC2000 service. This is great for you because now you can use the first-class service for free, sure there are some restrictions, but it still is one of the best on the market.

When you download TC2000, ensure you select the free version.

TC2000 — Winner Best Free Stock Trading Platform

Stock Charts, Indicators & Drawing Tools

The FREE service has over 80 stock chart indicators (or studies) which you can apply to the chart, all the popular ones are there and many exotic indicators also. You can use different bar types like Japanese Candlesticks and Open, High, Low Close OHLC.

What is really nice is that you have the ability to plot trend-lines not only on the price data but on all the indicators, this can be very valuable when you become more experienced in technical analysis.

In terms of drawing tools, they also allow you to use Fibonacci Lines, Fibonacci Fans and Fibonacci Arcs. The user interface is super simple and effective, with easy access to watchlists and stock scans, you will need to sign in to access and save your watchlists.

This is a great free software package with:

  • a vast array of indicators
  • candlesticks, OHLC.
  • the ability to plot Trend lines not only on price but on all the indicators
  • Fibonacci Lines / Fans / Arcs
  • free mealtime streaming Price & Volume
  • intra-day 1 minute — 1 year per bar
  • integrated portfolio management,
  • streaming News, this is invaluable
  • good user interface
  • watch-lists

Also, with the premium version, there is a powerful stock scanning system built-in.

TC2000 Free — Powerful & Free Charting

Overall there is an excellent array of technical indicators and drawing tools, all the big ones are there, from OBV, RSI and Bollinger Bands to Fibonacci Fans and Andrews Pitchfork.

With over 80 different indicators you will have plenty to play with. They have also introduced live alerts that you can configure to email or pop up if an indicator or trend line is breached. Very useful indeed.

Real-time Charts

The charts are real-time and the data comes from BATS, which means the price data is accurate, but the volume data only represents BATS trades. Luckily you can select whether you want to see only BATS volumes or get an estimate of the broader market volume. The data is free real-time streaming of Price & Volume and you can go to a granularity of intra-day 1 minute up to 1 year per bar.

Stock Market News & Social

Free StockCharts has built-in social and chat features for you to connect and share charts with friends.

Free is Great but the Paid Version is Better

The Liberated Stock Trader uses Telechart TC2000, to screen, sort, and find winning stocks, FreestockCharts will get you familiar with the interface and workflow until you are ready to upgrade to TC2000.

Starting at $9.95 per month you will get a full suite of excellent features and end of day data. The powerful Fundamental & Technical Stock Screeners,

4. — Good for Advanced Charts & Analysis From Industry Experts

Worthy of strong consideration are, which also comes with a solid recommendation. Worth mentioning are the sharp charts, which are visually very impressive, and its array of exotic indicators may excite the more advanced investor.

One thing to mention this service offers excellent Point and Figure Charts, which to my knowledge no other free service offers.

Point & Figure Charts — Old School with

Missing trend lines, rolling EPS, and a weak news service do not do it justice. They do also offer, like the other service providers, a monthly Membership service with increased functionality.

5. Yahoo Finance — Good Charts & Delayed News + Broker Integration

Yahoo has updated its interactive charting experience, it is a clean experience and full screen, so now it is actually very good indeed.

With 114 different technical indicators, you are well covered with Yahoo Finance. The interactive charts also now allow you to draw trendlines, linear regressions, and even quadrant lines.

A nice new addition is that Yahoo now provides real-time quotes and charts via the BATS system.

A strong step forward for Yahoo Charts

Yahoo Finance is working hard to make their charting system a respectable alternative to other free vendors.

They have actually done something quite innovative. You can now trade stocks through the Yahoo Finance charts. Yahoo has partnered with who essentially provides an interface to transport trade requests to many of the mainstream U.S. brokers.

This means, using Yahoo you can trade stocks with your broker. It is a nice feature but if you have a brokerage account you will already have access to real-time data, charts, and quotes and can trade directly with them, so it seems a little redundant, but still a step forward.

However, Yahoo has climbed from nearly last place to fourth place in this review thanks to their constant improvements. Coming in higher than Google in our review, Yahoo it seems, can do at least one thing better than Google.

Other Contenders in our Top 10 Free Stock Charts Review

6. CNN Money — Basic Stock Charts & Watchlist with No Login

CNN money fares well with all basic indicators available but suffers from only 1 sub window and no ability to draw trend lines. Also, the chart is only static, and non-interactive format becomes highly annoying after a while, having to continually refresh the page to get new indicators plotted will make the experiences investor growl.

CNN Money Free Charts with Earning Plotted — Nice

However, on the bright side, you can plot earnings (EPS) on the chart which is also a rare advantage amongst its competitors.

7. Robinhood — Simple Free Trading from a Smartphone

Robin Hood is a commission-free broker with a $0 account minimum. This means you can essentially sign up for Robin Hood and gain access to the free stock charts and real-time quotes and charts for free.

The only downside is that you cannot really do any serious stock analysis using Robin Hood. Because it is a mobile-first company the interface is limited to the size of your phone.

Mobile-first refers to the fact that Robinhood started only as an app on a phone and not a fully-fledged trading platform. This means you have to do everything via the phone including opening, funding, and trading.

The charts are free but severely limited in functionality.

Free trading refers to $0 commissions for Robinhood Financial self-directed individual cash or margin brokerage accounts that trade U.S. listed securities via mobile devices. As Robinhood is a mobile-first company, this means if you trade from your smartphone on the Major U.S. listed stocks available through Robinhood then the trade has no cost.

8. Reuters — Best for a Free Stocks Market News + Basic Stock Charts

With its powerful news reporting and RED Green Candlestick plotting Reuters does have something to offer, coming in joint fifth with Yahoo. Missing a rolling EPS indicator combined with its lack of trendlines takes it out of the reckoning for overall leadership.

Reuters Charts — With News Events Plotted

What I really like is the ability to plot breaking news for a stock on the chart itself this is really what sets it apart from the other charting tools.

For quickly referencing the global markets and perusing the news it is an OK service. For chart analysis it is useless.

The Ultimate Robo Advisor Guide

9. Finviz — Good Stock Market Visualizations & Charts

Finviz used to be an excellent free service, but now it is all behind a paywall. To get access to anything good here in terms of an interactive free charting experience you will need to pay a handsome sum.

Finviz has a lot of fans and some good heatmaps and visualizations, but practically none of it for free.

10. MSN Money Central — An OK Stock Screener & Not Much Else

While the stock screener from MSN Money is in the opinion of the author one of the best free screeners available, the charting software comes in poorly. Lack of trend lines, moving averages, OBV and index overlay mark it down heavily. However, with membership, you can get real-time stock quotes.

#11 — Google Finance — Retired — They Gave Up

Google finance suffered criminally in the weakness of its charting, scoring 13 out of 28 points, it is not all bad news.
Google is an excellent place to go for a single page of the latest news, blog alerts, and the P&L & Balance Sheet of any stock, and if you only need a rapid view of the general stock this is still a good stop of point for a general look. The news reports can be overlaid on top of the stock price which is unique and valuable to the investor interested in how news plays out in the stock price.

AOL Finance — Retired They Now Redirect To Yahoo Finance

AOL finance now redirects to Yahoo Finance for all charting and quotes — officially retired.

Free Stock Charts Review Summary

The market for Free Chart Services is competitive but there are some clear winners who offer great free services and also additional add-ons for a fee. Ultimately, what you select is down to your needs. If you are starting out as a new investor with a few hundred dollars to invest you certainly would not buy a premium stock charting package for $30 per month, you would use the free stock charting services.

There are many free stock charting services available, but only 3 are worth looking at. If you want a service that will grow with you on your journey, then TradingView is the clear winner. TC2000 FREE is great and allows you a good upgrade path to TC2000 our review winning software. Finally, Stock Rover’s free service is a great start in the world of stock screening and portfolio management.

The rest offer quick access to basic services, but nothing more.

But as you mature and your investment pot grows you will need to seriously think about selecting a professional grade Stock Charting Software Package.

Good luck on your journey to find the tools you need.

Stock Charts Free? How is it possible for these Free Stock Chart providers to make money and stay in business?

The answer lies in 2 business models.

  1. Advertising Based Model — Some providers make money from the advertising you see when you use the free software.
  2. Freemium — Some of the companies hope you will like the service and as you use it more you will seek out the premium benefits that a paid subscription will unlock.

There has never been a better time for freely available stock charting & free stock screening data on the web. But ultimately all companies need to make money to stay in business and keep providing the free stock charting tools we love.
